How Ordering a Firearm Online Works: Understanding FFL Transfers and Form 4473

Many first-time firearm buyers are surprised to learn just how simple and convenient it is to purchase a firearm online. While firearms cannot be shipped directly to your home, the process is straightforward, secure, and designed to comply with federal regulations.
At Spur Defense, we want our customers to feel confident and informed throughout every step of the buying process. Whether you’re purchasing your first handgun, adding a new rifle to your collection, or looking for a shotgun for hunting season, here’s what you need to know.
Step 1: Shop Online
The first step is easy, browse our extensive inventory at Spur Defense. From handguns and rifles to shotguns and suppressors, you’ll find products from many of the industry’s most trusted manufacturers.
Visit shop.spurdefense.com to explore our selection and place your order from the comfort of your home.
Step 2: Choose an FFL Near You
Federal law requires that firearms be transferred through a licensed firearms dealer known as a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL).
When you purchase a firearm online, you’ll be asked to select an FFL dealer where your firearm will be shipped. Many customers are surprised to discover there are often multiple FFL locations in their city, including:
- Local gun stores
- Sporting goods stores
- Pawn shops with firearm licenses
- Home-based FFL dealers
In most cases, you’ll have several convenient options nearby. Simply choose the location that works best for you during checkout.
Step 3: Your Firearm Ships to the Dealer
Once your order is processed, the firearm is shipped securely to your selected FFL dealer, not directly to your residence.
The receiving dealer will contact you when your firearm arrives and is ready for pickup.
Step 4: Complete ATF Form 4473
When you arrive at the FFL dealer, you’ll complete ATF Form 4473, officially known as the Firearms Transaction Record. This federally required form collects identifying information and confirms that you are legally eligible to purchase a firearm. The form is required for transfers from licensed firearm dealers.
Be sure to bring a valid government-issued photo ID that reflects your current address. The dealer will review the information and submit the required background check information.
Step 5: Background Check
After the Form 4473 is completed, the FFL dealer initiates a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) or the applicable state point of contact. The background check helps verify that the purchaser is legally eligible to own a firearm.
Many checks are completed quickly, although some transactions may require additional review and can be delayed. Federal law requires that the transfer follow applicable regulations before the firearm can be released.
Step 6: Take Your Firearm Home
Once your transfer is approved and all paperwork is complete, the dealer will release the firearm to you. At that point, you’re ready to head to the range, prepare for hunting season, or enhance your personal protection setup.
It’s Easier Than Most People Think
One of the biggest misconceptions about buying firearms online is that it’s complicated. In reality, the process is very similar to purchasing any other product online—there is simply an additional transfer step through a licensed dealer to ensure compliance with federal law.
The ability to select a local FFL means you can often choose a dealer just minutes from your home. In fact, many cities have multiple transfer options available, giving you flexibility and convenience.
