Step 2: Choose an FFL Near You

Federal law requires that firearms be transferred through a licensed firearms dealer known as a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL).

When you purchase a firearm online, you’ll be asked to select an FFL dealer where your firearm will be shipped. Many customers are surprised to discover there are often multiple FFL locations in their city, including:

Home-based FFL dealers

Step 3: Your Firearm Ships to the Dealer

Once your order is processed, the firearm is shipped securely to your selected FFL dealer, not directly to your residence.

Step 4: Complete ATF Form 4473

When you arrive at the FFL dealer, you’ll complete ATF Form 4473, officially known as the Firearms Transaction Record. Be sure to bring a valid government-issued photo ID that reflects your current address. The dealer will review the information and submit the required background check information.

Step 5: Background Check

After the Form 4473 is completed, the FFL dealer initiates a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) or the applicable state point of contact. The background check helps verify that the purchaser is legally eligible to own a firearm.

Many checks are completed quickly, although some transactions may require additional review and can be delayed. Federal law requires that the transfer follow applicable regulations before the firearm can be released.

Step 6: Take Your Firearm Home

Once your transfer is approved and all paperwork is complete, the dealer will release the firearm to you. At that point, you’re ready to head to the range, prepare for hunting season, or enhance your personal protection setup.
